Vitamin C is an important antioxidant.  With the invasion of the coronavirus there is a widespread activation of the immune system creating a surge of inflammatory mediators as the infection becomes septic.  Vitamin C has the capacity to mediate this response which should help to eliminate the inflammation in the alveoli of the lungs and thus reduce respiratory distress.

Vitamin C is available in a number of formulations.  The best of these are derived from plant sources including rosehips, acerola, camu camu.

Of the vegetables, the following are excellent sources of vitamin C:

  • Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower.
  • Green and red peppers.
  • Spinach, cabbage, turnip greens, and other leafy greens.
  • Sweet and white potatoes.
  • Tomatoes and tomato juice.
  • Winter squash

Vitamin C is widely available as Ascorbic acid in every pharmacy and while organic complexes may offer improvements in absorbtion and reduce gastric irritation, even the plain products are likely better than none at all.
